Phoenix, AZ—Arizona voters are opposed to recent efforts to repeal Arizona’s successful and popular Clean Elections system, according to new polling released today by the Arizona Advocacy Network. The poll also found that 78 percent support the popular program. Support was consistent across party affiliation as well as socioeconomic and geographic locale.
“The Arizona Chamber of Commerce has called an all-out war on Clean Elections in Arizona,” said Linda Brown, executive director of the Arizona Advocacy Network. “Today’s survey results show that their dishonest campaign to kill Clean Elections and buy the legislature is wholly unpopular with voters in our state.”
“Arizona voters want their elected officials to be accountable to them and not the big-money special interests in corporate Arizona,” said Brown. “Repealing Clean Elections would take power away from Arizona voters and return it to corporate lobbyists. Lawmakers should oppose all efforts to throw out this popular system.”
A current effort by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce to repeal Clean Elections is strongly opposed by Arizonans, according to the poll. Seventy-eight percent of voters are in favor of Clean Elections and 77 percent oppose efforts to eliminate the program. In addition, 62 percent would vote against any repeal measure on the ballot.
The poll of 502 Arizona likely voters was conducted April 5-6, 2010 by Zogby International and commissioned by Public Campaign and Common Cause. The polling memo is available online at www.savecleanelections.com/polling .
The Save Clean Elections campaign is comprised of good government advocates including the League of Women Voters of Arizona, League of Women Voters of Metro Phoenix, League of Women Voters of Tucson, Arizona PIRG, Arizona Hispanic Community Forum, Sierra Club, Grand Canyon Chapter, Arizona Advocacy Network Foundation and the Clean Elections Institute.
